How Cryotherapy Works

Whole Body Cryotherapy has Immediate, Short-term and Cumulative benefits

Step 01

Stimulus: Too Cold!

The low temperatures of the whole-body cryotherapy session STIMULATE THE THERMORECEPTORS IN THE SKIN AND THE NERVE ENDINGS of the sympathetic nervous system. It is the part of our nervous system responsible for reacting to dangerous or stressful situations. SIGNAL GOES TO THE BRAIN.

Reaction: Danger

THERMORECEPTORS TRIGGER HYPOTHALAMUS – a small region in the base of the brain that plays a crucial role in many important functions of the body, including releasing hormones and regulating body temperature. The extremely low, unsuitable for survival, temperature of the air that the peripheral thermoreceptors register is PERCEIVED AS A DEATH THREAT, and the body mobilizes to withstand it.

Adaptation: Protect

TEMPERATURE OF THE CORE NEEDS TO BE PROTECTED from dropping to survive; so, the hypothalamus responds by constricting the peripheral tissue and abdominal organs to avoid unnecessary heat wasting. At the same time, dilation of blood vessels happens in heat-generating organs – muscles and the under-skin fat tissues. During the cryosession, while skin temperature is dropping, BLOOD GETS  DRAWN INTO THE CORE TO KEEP IT WARM. Systolic blood pressure increases. During and just after the cold exposure internal organs receive nutrients and oxygen delivered by the enhanced blood flow. This thermal camera image clearly demonstrates how skin temperature changes during the treatment from 32.6° C/90.6° F to 8° C/46.2° F while temperature of the core remains intact:

Step 04

Restoration: Release

Directly after the exposure, once the perceived threat is over, the blood vessels in the skin dilate and THE BLOOD RUSHES BACK to peripheral tissues, resulting in a burst of physiological processes that were set off due to the cold exposure. The body feels energized.

As there is no more stress, “feel good hormones” ENDORPHINS GET RELEASED, resulting in a sense of happiness and vitality. How Cryotherapy Works

Cryotherapy in Houston is the application of extreme cold, also know as ‘cold therapy’. Thankfully, the days of ice baths are over! Using our cutting edge Cryosauna we are able to provide maximum results with minimal treatment time. The cryo sauna quickly and efficiently lowers temperature using a “dry ice” environment where nitrogen gas at -180 to -264 degrees Fahrenheit envelops the body. Your skin will be lowered to temperatures between 32 to 40 degrees Fahrenheit.

When your skin temperature drops, your body is triggered into ‘survival mode’. This puts several mechanisms into action:

  • Endorphins, adrenaline and noradrenaline are released, improving mood.
  • Lowering tissue temperature slows down what scientists call ‘secondary injury’, the blood collecting in tissues. It can limit the amount of bleeding and may help with bruising.
  • Sudden cold therapy triggers rapid circulation of the bodies blood flow. Your blood is pulled inwards to protect your vital organs and when you exit the chamber, your body sends your ‘super charged’ or oxygenated blood back outwards towards your extremities again, providing an improved state of healing and recovery.
  • Capillaries expand up to four times the normal amount. This enables white blood cells to access and heal injuries faster.

Whole Body Cryotherapy is an intriguing wellness treatment that involves exposing your body to extreme cold for potential benefits in areas like recovery and pain management. If you’re curious about how it works or its safety, our list of common questions (FAQs) provides valuable insights.

  • Your skin and hair must be dry when using cryotherapy.
  • During your session you will be required to wear your undergarments. You may also wear shorts and a tank top with no metal accessories.
  • You must wear the provided gloves, socks, slippers, in the chamber for your safety.
  • Treatments will be limited to three minutes to avoid overexposure.
  • You may end the procedure for any reason at any time (e.g. lightheadedness or anxiety).
  • Remove all jewelry and external piercings before your session.
  • Please notify the technician if you have any metal implants or prosthetics.
  • Please notify the technician if you have any changes in your medical history with subsequent cryotherapy use.

Yes, Cryotherapy has been used in Europe and Asia for almost thirty years. There are numerous clinical studies and many are listed on various websites and clinical studies.

In a long term, it could not, as the cold would damage the tissue. This is the reason why Cryosauna treatment needs to be so short. The length of the treatment has been established to get the skin temperature down to not less than 34 F. This way, frostbite does not happen, while the body thinks it is freezing and mobilizes all its resources to stay alive. 3 min treatment in Cryosauna is much more effective and tolerable than taking a cold shower or sitting in an ice bath.

We recommend at least 10 sessions in the first 30 days for optimal results. Some people will need more. If you aren’t sure how many sessions you need, a BEluxe Holistic Spa Cryo technician will be happy to help you customize a plan. After initial treatment plan you will need to maintain your results, so sessions can be cut down to 1-2 times a week or less. If after a month or two, you are ready for another boost, you can start the process over again.

No! Cryotherapy is much different than an ice bath. You are simply unable to achieve the same results with an ice bath. After 12-15 minutes of a shockingly cold ice bath the skin temperature only arrives at 41 degrees whereas with 2-3 minutes of whole body cryotherapy the skin temperature gets as low as 30 degrees, this allows for a different physiological response from the body increasing your speed of recovery and overall healing. During an ice bath, the cold actually penetrates into deeper skin tissue and can be damaging to the skin. In the cryosauna, the skin is never penetrated, yet the body responds on a deeper level, even improving the skin’s overall condition.

No. The immediate cold impact of the cryotherapy will raise the internal body temperature for a short period of time. The stimulation of the immune system can help decrease the severity and frequency of future colds.

Yes, you most definitely can! In fact, many of our clients have reported being able to tolerate the cold much better after having eaten within the past few hours before their session.

No, nitrogen is a friendly, non-toxic gas. Nitrogen composes 78% of the air that we breathe. The other components are 16% Oxygen, 1% Hydrogen and 5% other gases. Nitrogen is as common and safe as Oxygen
